From PCs to optics: Moscow boosts high-tech outputs

Moscow is home to more than 4,200 industrial companies, while every third of them is a high-tech business. As the municipality provides an extensive backing, they are strengthening their market standing and increasing outputs; in the first seven months of 2024, the production of computers, optics and electronics in the capital increased by 111 per cent, as announced by Maxim Liksutov, Deputy Moscow Mayor for Transport and Industry.

Today, local electronics manufacturers can take advantage of more than 20 systemic support modalities, including special purpose loans and subsidies. or benefit from a number of anti-crisis arrangements. More information is available on the Moscow investment portal.

“The capital is home to more than 100 companies engaged in the production of computers, optics and electronics. With the vast municipal support, they develop and bring innovative products to market, expand their portfolios and increase outputs. In January — July, the enterprises increased outputs of high-tech products by more than 2.1 times. The steady upward trend confirms that the strategic course towards innovative technologies, which Moscow is implementing by order of Sergei Sobyanin, is really effective,” says Maxim Liksutov.

In particular, Moscow boosted outputs of electric motors, generators, transformers and switchgear, control and measuring equipment, cable products and other electrical devices, while Moscow-made goods meet high quality standards and are in demand both domestically and globally.

“Due to the favorable business climate in Moscow, businesses are successfully adapting to today’s challenges and actively conquering sales markets. In the first seven months of 2024, Moscow-based manufacturers shipped computers, electronic and optical products worth more than 325 billion rubles, which is almost 40 per cent more compared to the same period last year. In particular, shipments of printed circuit boards and lighting fixtures increased by a quarter, and shipments of computers and peripheral equipment grew by more than a third. Shipments of cable products increased by more than 20 per cent and control, measuring and navigation devices — by more than 30 per cent,” says Anatoly Garbuzov, Moscow Government Minister and Head of the Moscow Department of Investment and Industrial Policy.

Moscow has a well-developed manufacturing capacity, with more than 4,200 industrial companies employing over 725,000 people; 40 to 50 medium/large enterprises and about 100 small businesses emerge every year to produce a variety of goods and drive innovation and development. 300,000 residents are employed in the R&D sector.
